Two-Phase Flow Modeling for Bed Erosion by a Plane Jet Impingement

This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on the erosion of a horizontal granular bed by two-dimensional plane vertical impinging jet to predict eroded craters’ size scaling (depth width). The simulations help understand microscopic processes that govern in this complex flow. A modified jet-bed distance, accounting for virtual origin, is successfully used obtain unique relationship between crater local Shields parameter. work develops two-phase flow model reproduce results. techniques are based finite volume formulation approximate spatial derivatives, projection technique calculate pressure velocity each phase, staggered grid avoid spurious oscillations. Different options sediment’s solid-to-liquid transition during proposed, tested, discussed. One unified equations continuum mechanics, others closure viscosity or momentum transfer. good agreement solutions measurements obtained.
